I’m Jen Thomas, a radio presenter, journalist, columnist, intern and a freelance Broadcast Assistant at the BBC. I’ve been working as a freelance journalist for music and lifestyle magazines, celebrity websites, local newspapers and more for 16 years. At the age of 13 I taught myself HTML and set up an online music magazine, I soon built up contacts within the music industry through interviewing and reviewing to build up a portfolio.
I left school at 16 to undertake long term work experience at the Milton Keynes Citizen newspaper on the news and entertainment desks, and soon started to write for The Fly, Rock Sound, Big Cheese, AOL, Yahoo OMG, Things & Ink and others.
Work placements/shadowing experience includes BBC Radio Lincolnshire, The Jeremy Vine Show at BBC Radio 2, Dino & Pete’s breakfast show on Capital FM East Midlands, The Beat/Introducing at BBC Nottingham and the Lincs FM newsdesk and guesting on Radio Newark. These experiences have led to my internship at Capital FM, and I am now a freelance Broadcast Assistant at BBC Radio Nottingham, as well as a monthly columnist in The Nottingham Post.
I present on Fly FM, with a two hour solo show every Tuesday from 1-3pm. http://www.flyfm.co.uk. So far for my show I have interviewed Young Guns, Don Broco, Yashin, Scouting For Girls, with more to come.
I am currently studying Broadcast Journalism at Nottingham Trent University. I previously co-presented on BBC Radio Stoke’s Subculture show with Rob Adcock as the “national music expert” for 18 months before moving to London; here is a clip from my first ever show with them:
There are numerous vlogs from our time on the BBC Stoke show, on the old Facebook group:
